Uuuhhgg, I’m so depressed – this was such a GREAT ice cream maker when we first got it. We made at least 30 batches of different flavors. It handled the chunks of fruit like a pro and was super quiet. Our freezer still has 3 containers of leftovers, and I’m craving one now. The setup was a snap, and it’s also really easy to clean. No more buying ice, no more pre-freezing, no more rock salt. It’s exactly what I wanted! I wish the paddle you put in the mixture was metal; I’m not sure how long that plastic one would have lasted.
Unfortunately, it doesn’t get cold anymore, so I think the compressor might have gone out. I troubleshooted it, but nothing worked, so it was time to send it to the recycler. It’s too bad because it was a dream machine, and I would have highly recommended it, but it should last for years. Maybe I got a lemon, who knows? Oh, lemon ice cream sounds good right now, too. Bummer!

This ice cream maker is a pretty big and heavy unit compared with the type that requires a separate freezing tub. But that is to be expected because of the compressor contained within it. This becomes the trade-off for this type of ice cream maker, along with the price of the unit itself ($245 at the time of this review).
The container volume is in line with my usual ice cream recipe, so there is no difference. There is the convenience of not needing to pre-freeze the container before making ice cream, but then again, I would only need this feature if I were making ice cream on a whim, which, through the years, I have never done. For machines of this type, the marketing always says that you can make multiple batches of ice cream in one shot. Still, reading the manual, it says to let the compressor rest for 3 hours between batches, so that is not the case – although it is still faster than waiting for the ice cream container to re-freeze.
One thing with this ice cream container is that once you pull it out of the machine, that is, the ice cream is done, you need to empty it quickly. Without any additional cold, the ice cream starts to melt from the room’s ambient temperature. With the frozen tub type of container, I never had that problem because it still provided a level of cold. The ice cream I transfer into my ice cream container is runnier with this machine than the frozen tub, mainly because it starts to melt quickly.
Overall, this machine works great to produce ice cream without the need to pre-freeze the container. But at this price point, because it is a big and heavy single-purpose machine and starts melting quickly after making the ice cream, I cannot say that I like this machine all that much. I do not make batches after batches of ice cream. I only make one batch, eat it, and then make another. The frozen container type of machine works just fine for me.
